One of the things that gives the most gratification to an IT Consultant is when one of our important clients trust us with a project that it was initially intended to be given to the vendor of the product involved in it. The sense of fullfillment when you have conquered the trust and the esteem of our client, and the thrills of a new challenge is what we, members of Web World, have experienced while offering our skills and experience at the service of our customer to help them accomplish a major change in the configurations of their numerous Weblogic Server installations. More precisely, the necessity was to switch the type of the already existing datasources which connect to the new Oracle 19c instances from “Generic” to “Active GridLink”. This would have given to our client the chance to be more agile and flexible in managing important database side activities like patching. Something that looks easy on paper, right? But we had to face different major versions of the product, and hundreds of datasource configurations per domain, with several domains per environment (development, testing, quality and production), each of them hosting hundreds of applications, many of them critical to our client business. Doing it manually it was beyond unthinkable, so we started designing a python script that interacts with the WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST) utility. This gave us the opportunity to automize all the process and make it very, very fast. Implementing it was not as trivial as you would think to, as we had to adapt the script to each different major version (and it’s features) of Weblogic Server and the different types of configuration a datasource could present (global transactions, different drivers, many jndi names, etc...). But the challenge was not done yet, we would also have to think about how we would tailor a very detailed execution plan to assure the least possible impact on the delivering of critical business applications. As far as we are now with this project, our client is very satisfied with how Sorint managed such an important challenge, and this is the most rewarding thing about it for us.

Una delle cose che più gratificano un consulente informatico è quando uno dei nostri importanti clienti ci affida un progetto che inizialmente doveva essere affidato al fornitore del prodotto coinvolto.

Il senso di appagamento che si prova quando si è conquistata la fiducia e la stima del cliente e l'emozione di una nuova sfida è quello che noi, membri di Web World, abbiamo provato mettendo le nostre competenze e la nostra esperienza al servizio del nostro cliente per aiutarlo a realizzare un importante cambiamento nelle configurazioni delle sue numerose installazioni di Weblogic Server.

Più precisamente, la necessità era quella di cambiare il tipo di datasource già esistenti che si connettono alle nuove istanze Oracle 19c da "Generic" a "Active GridLink". Questo avrebbe dato al nostro cliente la possibilità di essere più agile e flessibile nella gestione di importanti attività lato database come il patching. Una cosa che sembra facile sulla carta, giusto?

Ma abbiamo dovuto affrontare diverse versioni principali del prodotto e centinaia di configurazioni di fonti di dati per dominio, con diversi domini per ambiente (sviluppo, test, qualità e produzione), ognuno dei quali ospitava centinaia di applicazioni, molte delle quali critiche per l'attività del nostro cliente. Farlo manualmente era impensabile, quindi abbiamo iniziato a progettare uno script python che interagisce con l'utility WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST). Questo ci ha dato la possibilità di automatizzare tutto il processo e di renderlo molto, molto veloce.

L'implementazione non è stata così banale come si potrebbe pensare, in quanto abbiamo dovuto adattare lo script a ogni diversa versione principale (e alle sue caratteristiche) di Weblogic Server e ai diversi tipi di configurazione che una fonte di dati poteva presentare (transazioni globali, diversi driver, molti nomi jndi, ecc...).

Ma la sfida non era ancora finita, dovevamo anche pensare a come adattare un piano di esecuzione molto dettagliato per assicurare il minor impatto possibile sull'erogazione delle applicazioni aziendali critiche.

Per concludere, Il nostro cliente è molto soddisfatto di come Sorint ha gestito una sfida così importante, e questo è l'aspetto più gratificante per noi.
